4.4 out of 5 · Manufacturer rating from 46 reviews
AU $279inc. GSTIn stock

A 200 litre tumbler split into two chambers, so one side cures while you keep filling the other. A hand crank with a lockable ratchet turns the barrel, deep internal fins break the clumps up as it goes, and adjustable vents let air in. Two wide sliding doors take the scraps in and the finished compost out. PP barrel on a powder-coated steel frame, raised off the ground, 13.9 kg empty.

Setting up

Assembly is required and the fixings and instructions come in the carton. Build it where it will live, because it is easier to walk an empty barrel into place than a full one. Stand it on level ground with room to swing the crank, and leave a gap underneath if you want to slide a container in to catch the liquid that drains out.

One side cures while the other fills.

Two hundred litres split into two chambers, turned by a hand crank, so there is never a batch you have to stop feeding.

The barrel is divided down the middle. You fill one chamber with kitchen scraps and garden waste until it is loaded, then shut it and start on the second while the first finishes. The manufacturer puts a full batch at about four to six weeks. Each chamber has its own wide sliding door, so you are never digging past finished compost to add a bucket of peelings.

A hand crank with a lockable ratchet does the turning, and deep fins inside break up the clumps as the barrel rolls. Adjustable vents let air in without the pressure building up. The PP barrel sits on a powder-coated steel frame, up off the ground and away from anything that would rather be inside it.

Goes with.

What this usually leaves the warehouse with.

A crank instead of a fork.

The barrel turns on a hand crank with a lockable ratchet, so you decide how far it goes and it stays where you leave it. Deep fins inside catch the load and break the clumps apart as it rolls, which is the part that would otherwise be done with a garden fork and a sore back. A few turns every few days is the whole job.

Air in, pressure out.

Built-in vents open and close, so you can let more air into a wet load or close them down on a dry one. Air is what keeps a tumbler working rather than souring, and it stops pressure building inside the sealed barrel. The manufacturer puts a full batch at around four to six weeks, depending on what goes in and the weather.

Built to stand outside.

The barrel is PP plastic and the frame is powder-coated carbon steel, which is the combination that survives sun, rain and frost without rusting through at the legs. It stands 955 mm wide and 1050 mm tall, and weighs 13.9 kg empty, so a backyard, a patio corner or a community plot all suit it.

What it holds.

Capacity is the total across both chambers; in practice one is filling while the other is left alone to finish.

Questions we get asked

How long does a batch take?

The manufacturer puts it at about four to six weeks. Chopping the scraps small before they go in helps, as does turning the barrel every few days and keeping the load damp rather than wet. Warm weather is faster than a cold winter, whatever the bin.

What should I keep out of it?

The manufacturer advises against citrus, meat, dairy and oily food. Kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, vegetable peelings, grass clippings, leaves and soft garden prunings are all fine. Cut anything bulky down before it goes in so the fins can break it up.

Why two chambers?

Because compost needs to be left alone at the end. With one barrel you either stop adding scraps or you keep restarting the batch. Here you load one side, close it, and fill the other while the first finishes, so the kitchen bin always has somewhere to go.

Does it drip?

Composting liquid drains out, which is worth catching. The frame holds the barrel up off the ground, so you can slide a container underneath and collect it. Dilute what you collect with water before it goes anywhere near a plant.

Will it last outside?

It is made for it. The barrel is PP plastic and the frame is powder-coated carbon steel, so sun and rain are not a problem. Stand it on level ground; a barrel this size is easier to crank when it is not leaning.
