Setting up

Mark the fixing positions with a level, fix to the wall with the accessories supplied, and sit the shelf on. The maker describes it as three steps. Screw into studs or solid wall where you can.

The shelf above the bench.

Every bench gathers a row of things that should be at eye level and are not. This puts them there.

It is an L-shaped shelf in brushed 430 stainless: a 44 mm backsplash along the rear so splashes hit steel, a flat 218 millimetre shelf, and a 15 millimetre lip along the front that stops a jar sliding off when the bench below gets knocked. There are no dead corners to trap anything, which is why stainless shelving is what commercial kitchens use.

It is rated to 20 kilograms, which is a row of five litre oil tins or the whole spice line with room to spare. A silicone liner in the box goes on top to protect against scratches and noise. The shelf itself weighs four kilograms and comes with the accessories to fit it.

Goes with.

What this usually leaves the warehouse with.

Close view of the front lip and bracket of the shelf

Folded from one sheet.

The backsplash, the shelf and the front lip make one L-shaped piece of 430 stainless with no dead corners for water or crumbs to find, so the surface wipes in one pass. The brushed treatment resists the scratches, corrosion and tarnish a busy kitchen puts on it.

  • L-shaped, no dead corners
  • Brushed 430 stainless
  • Wipes in one pass
A food storage tub being placed on the wall shelf

A lip that saves a jar.

Fifteen millimetres is not much, but it is enough. A shelf above a bench gets bumped from below every day, and the lip along the front edge is the difference between a jar that shuffles forward and a jar that lands in the pot. The backsplash does the same job at the rear, keeping the wall dry when something on the shelf gets splashed from the stove.

  • 15 mm front lip
  • 44 mm rear backsplash keeps the wall dry
  • Silicone liner in the box
The wall shelf above a coffee machine holding cups

Twenty kilograms at eye level.

Rated to 20 kilograms. That is a run of oil tins, the spice line, a row of dry goods bins, or a small microwave in a staff room. In a cafe it goes above the coffee bench for cups; in a garage it holds the things that used to live on the floor. A 406 mm version is listed for the gap beside a rangehood.

What it will hold.

Rating is for a load spread along the shelf with the fixings into studs or solid wall. A heavy single item sits over a fixing.

Questions we get asked

Will it hold a microwave?

A small one, yes. Most compact microwaves weigh 10 to 14 kg and the shelf is rated to 20, provided the fixings are into studs or solid wall. Sit the microwave centred over the fixings rather than at one end.

What do I fix it to?

Studs are best. In plaster without a stud behind, use heavy hollow-wall anchors. In tile over masonry, drill through the tile with a tile bit and plug the masonry behind it.

Is the backsplash tall enough to stop splashes?

It stands 44 mm above the shelf, which catches what is thrown up from a pan below and keeps the wall dry directly behind the shelf. It is not a full splashback; for that, tile the wall or fit a sheet behind.

Does the brushed finish scratch?

It marks like any stainless, and the brushing hides most of it. Wipe along the grain with warm water and detergent. Avoid steel wool and abrasive powders, which leave marks across the grain that show.

Can two go end to end?

Yes. Two shelves sit end to end to make a run. Give each shelf its own fixings rather than sharing them.
